Borderline Intellectual Functioning: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract: The literature related to people with borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) was systematically reviewed in order to summarize the present knowledge. Database searches yielded 1,726 citations, and 49 studies were included in the review. People with BIF face a variety of hardships in life, including neurocognitive, social, and mental health problems. When adults with BIF were compared with the general population, they held lower-skilled jobs and earned less money. Although some risk factors (e.g., low birth … Show more

“…The first component accounted for 68% of score variance for the B-cohort and 74% of score variance for the K-cohort. We identified children as having low cognitive ability if they scored more than one standard deviation below the sample mean on the first extracted component, the cut-off point used to identify borderline intellectual functioning in older children and adults (Peltopuro, Ahonen, Kaartinen, Seppala, & Narhi, 2014;Salvador-Carulla et al, 2013). This led to the identification of 95 of 651 (14.6%) children in the B-cohort and 89 of 499 (17.8%) children in the K-cohort for whom data were available with low cognitive ability.…”

“…Borderline Intellectual Functioning (BIF) is a complex clinical entity that has received poor scientific investigation [1, 2]. According to the CONFIL consensus group [3], BIF can be defined as a “ health meta-condition … characterized by various cognitive dysfunctions associated with an intellectual quotient (IQ) between 71 and 85 which determines a deficit in the individual’s functioning both in the restriction of activities and in the limitation of social participation ”.…”

Excluding BIF due to genetic and chromosomal abnormalities syndromes, the mostly frequent causes related to this condition are biological factors, like perinatal complications, and epigenetic factors related to the social environment such as maltreatment, abuse, neglect and high level of maternal stress [1, 47]. It is estimated that the prevalence of “non genetic” BIF ranges between 7 to 12% [2, 3] but the lack of terminological consensus and specific diagnostic code in the DSM-V [8] and ICD10 [9] makes it difficult to have a precise estimate.…”
