Boosting the electro-mechanical coupling of piezoelectric polyvinyl alcohol–polyvinylidene fluoride blends by dispersing nano-graphene platelets

Abstract: Water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) mixed with piezo-active polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) micro-grains constitute hybrid blends for transfusing mechanical energy to electric one. The value of the piezoelectric coefficient is, in principle, a portion of the value that neat PVdF exhibits. In the present work, we investigate the possibility, by dispersing nano-graphene platelets (NGPs), to augment the total electromechanical coupling. Mechanical stress applied on structurally and compositionally heterogeneous … Show more

“…Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PA)-PVDF blends can improve piezoelectric coefficient by ca. 150% comparing to the pure PVDF [264]. The enhancement of PVDF piezoelectric properties can be achieved, for example, by simultaneous addition of G, MnO2 and MWCNTs [265].…”

“…Other biological materials with piezoelectric properties can be found in natur example, 16 amino acids and their compounds hold piezoelectric properties at ro perature. Among them, the one with the most promising piezoelectric characteris PVA is a water-soluble polymer known for its physicochemical properties, such as film formation, flexibility, and thermal stability [79]. There are studies showing a method for manufacturing high-quality crystalline thin layers of piezoelectric γ-glycine crystals between PVA layers.…”

“…To overcome these limitations of sensors based on either smart pattern design or piezoelectric composites, intrinsically stretchable piezoelectric materials in the form of polymer blends with tailored macroscopically uniform properties can be developed. Polymer blends containing the polar β phase PVDF have been widely studied as piezoelectric films and nanofibers, such as PVDF/poly(methyl-methacrylate) (PMMA), PVDF/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), PVDF/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), and PVDF/photopolymers, and their piezoelectric properties and stretchability are compared in Table S1. In particular, for stretchable sensor materials, PVDF/acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) blend can be a potential candidate that possesses both stretchability and piezoelectricity.…”
