For several decades the Soviet academic psychology community was isolated from the West, yet after the collapse of the Soviet Union each of the 15 countries went their own way in economic, social, and scientific development. The paper analyses publications from post-Soviet countries in psychological journals in 1992-2017, i.e. 26 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Over the period in question, 15 post-Soviet countries had published 4,986 papers in psychology, accounting for less than one percent of the world output in psychological journals. However, the growth of post-Soviet countries' output in psychological journals, especially that of Russia and Estonia, is observed during this period. Over time, post-Soviet authors began to write more papers in international teams, constantly increasing the proportion of papers in which they are leaders and main contributors. Their papers are still underrepresented in the best journals as well as among the most cited papers in the field and are also cited lower than the world average. However, the impact of psychological papers from post-Soviet countries increases with time. There is a huge diversity between 15 post-Soviet countries in terms of contribution, autonomy, and impact. Regarding the number of papers in psychological journals, the leading nations are Russia, Estonia, Lithuania, Ukraine, and Georgia. Estonia is the leader in autonomy in publishing papers in psychological journals among post-Soviet countries. Papers from Estonia and Georgia are cited higher than the world average, whereas papers from Russia and Ukraine are cited below the world average. Estonia and Georgia also boast a high number of Highly cited papers.

We estimate the effect of the Russian University excellence program (Project 5-100) initiated by the Government in 2013 on research performance of top Russian universities which received, on a competitive basis, substantial financial support within this program. To do so we use an econometric analysis of longitudinal data applying a linear growth model with mixed effects, with different characteristics of research output as dependent variables. We demonstrate that there is a significant positive effect of Project 5-100 which appeared from the very first years of its implementationthat is, the universities receiving financial support demonstrate a substantial, steady increase in publications both measured in total numbers and per capita when compared to universities from the control group. An analysis of the structure of publication output allows us to demonstrate that not only quantitative but also qualitative growth has taken place, although the impact of Project 5-100 on quality is heterogeneous across universities and disciplines. Finally, we examine to what extent the change in the structure of research output may be attributed to changes in research collaboration patterns.

This article presents the results of a study on the representation of Russian publications in the global array of publications that discuss narrow thematic areas within the entire post-Soviet period, using ranking distributions from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS CC). For extraction and analysis, the classifiers provided by the WoS categories were used. Of the 252 subject categories in the WoS CC, the share of Russian publications for 2010–2017 was not less than 0.4% of the global flow in 132 scientific areas. Therefore, in the period 1993–2000, a gradual recovery was found of Russia’s lost position in the world ranking of countries by number of publications in the WoS CC. Currently, positive changes have been observed both for the entire array of Russian publications in particular in narrow scientific topics. The highest-ranking position for Russian publications fell in 1993–1999, and the greatest decline, when the share of Russian publications fell to their minimum values, was in 2011–2014. Data on the scientific areas in which Russia managed to stay in the top 10 leading countries during its recent history, according to share of publications in the global array, are presented. This list slightly expanded from 2010 to 2017, and today, it includes 39 areas in which Russia is in the top 10 countries, and it is among the five leading countries in eight areas of knowledge.
