As a result, the statistical analysis in the book remains ad hoc, as few theoretical explanations are offered regarding the specification of the regressions. Of the eleven Ordinary Least Squared regressions reported, the fit is poor, with adjusted R squares ranging between 0.06 and 0.23 (which may be attributed to measurement errors in the survey or to misspecification).In addition, while Shi emphasizes the conceptual differences in political participation between China and Western countries, his comparative analysis does not always seem appropriate in view of the fundamental difference in political dynamism and mechanisms between China and the Western democracies. Finally, the questionnaire employed during the survey should have been included so as to help the reader understand the book's conceptual argument and empirical results.Despite these shortcomings, the book clearly is a major contribution to the
