Summary Gorteria diffusa has elaborate petal spots that attract pollinators through sexual deception, but how G. diffusa controls spot development is largely unknown. Here, we investigate how pigmentation is regulated during spot formation. We determined the anthocyanin composition of G. diffusa petals and combined gene expression analysis with protein interaction assays to characterise R2R3‐MYBs that likely regulate pigment production in G. diffusa petal spots. We found that cyanidin 3‐glucoside pigments G. diffusa ray floret petals. Unlike other petal regions, spots contain a high proportion of malonylated anthocyanin. We identified three subgroup 6 R2R3‐MYB transcription factors (GdMYBSG6‐1,2,3) that likely activate the production of spot pigmentation. These genes are upregulated in developing spots and induce ectopic anthocyanin production upon heterologous expression in tobacco. Interaction assays suggest that these transcription factors regulate genes encoding three anthocyanin synthesis enzymes. We demonstrate that the elaboration of complex spots in G. diffusa begins with the accumulation of malonylated pigments at the base of ray floret petals, positively regulated by three paralogous R2R3‐MYB transcription factors. Our results indicate that the functional diversification of these GdMYBSG6s involved changes in the spatial control of their transcription, and modification of the duration of GdMYBSG6 gene expression contributes towards floral variation within the species.

Nigel Weiss was an astrophysicist and applied mathematician, born in South Africa but based in Cambridge for most of his career. He made a number of important contributions to the study of sunspots, where he produced a detailed model of their complex structure. He also made important contributions to theory of the solar 22-year magnetic cycle, using pioneering numerical modelling and drawing attention to the dynamical effects of symmetry breaking and of historic proxy data through observations of radioactive isotopes in tree rings and ice cores. A major part of his work was the numerical and theoretical investigation of many aspects of the interaction of magnetic fields with thermal convection in the Sun and stars. The numerical studies in particular were pioneering in the context of computer resources at that time. He led a talented group of students and postdocs, many of whom have held senior positions in UK and US universities. He combined great physical insight with expertise in numerical computation, nonlinear dynamics and bifurcation theory, and was an inspirational supervisor and mentor, combining high academic standards with an open generous nature. Apart from his work he had a strong interest in twentieth-century art and served on the National Gallery Consultative Group for many years.

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia are increasingly growing and innovating along with the development of information technology. Aceh, especially Banda Aceh City, is one of Indonesia's regions where MSMEs experience annual growth. Thus, the objectives of this study were to analyze the influence of e-commerce, capital, and labour on MSME income in Banda Aceh City with quantitative research. The population of this study comprised business units registered with the Ministry of Cooperative and SMEs of Banda Aceh City, with 100 business units selected as the research sample. The sampling technique employed was cluster sampling. Data collection utilized a questionnaire, and the specific analysis technique applied was the multiple linear regression test. The study found that e-commerce, capital, and labour positively and significantly influence MSME income in Banda Aceh City. These findings suggest that policymakers should promote e-commerce adoption among MSMEs through training and infrastructure support, enhance access to capital through tailored financial schemes, and invest in labour skills development via vocational training and industry partnerships. By combining these measures, Banda Aceh City can bolster the growth and sustainability of its MSME sector, fostering increased income generation and economic development.
