Although many of the women whose stories Orleck shares in the book remained financially poor, many did meet their goals of a better life for their children beginning with Operation Life programs.The elimination of many antipoverty programs was not because of the eradication of poverty. The themes that appear in the book "again and again: too many children, too little access to birth control, and too many husbands and boyfriends addicted to gambling, alcohol, and violence" (p. 75), "race and sex discrimination, and lack of childcare, were the key factors keeping poor mothers out of jobs that could pull their families out of welfare" (p. 240), continue to confront women too many decades later. We need to seek and listen to the Ruby Duncans in all communities.
