SUMMARYMicroelectrode recordings in explants of fetal rodent medulla and spinal cord demonstrate that a variety of organotypic temporal patterns of spontaneous bioelectric discharges occur during maturation of these CNS tissues in culture. The spontaneous activities include repetitive barrages of spike potentials, as well as stereotyped slow-waves. These discharges last up to several sec, and they may occur a t regular intervals of the order of 1--10 sec, although activity patterns are often much more irregular. Some explants also show clear periodicity in the recurrence of phases of relative activity and inactivity, with cycle times ranging up t o about 10 min. Correlations between the network excitability properties of the CNS tissues and their patterned spontaneous discharges were obtained by electrophysiologic analyses of responses to microelectrode stimulation.These complex, yet stereotyped, spontaneous bioelectric discharge patterns in cultures of organized CNS tissues show remarkable mimicry of rhythmic activities which occur in the embryonic CNS in situ, as determined by electrophysiologic and behavioral motility studies in the intact animal. Organotypic CNS explants provide, therefore, a valuable model system for further analyses of the cellular and moiecular mechanisms underlying early development of behavior.

Ever since the publication of the Encyclopédie, in the decades after mid-eighteenth century, there has been an on-going debate about the implications of the metaphor of enlightenment, mainly based on themes discussed in Diderot’s and d’Alembert’s work. Sadly, however, one major field has been left outside; scholars have dealt with two branches of the tree of knowledge, science and the liberal arts, but ignored the branch of mechanical arts. This article takes a starting-point in the reintroduction of political economy, with division of labour, and technology into an assessment of the Enlightenment. It has the ambition of discussing the process whereby progress became a central feature of eighteenth-century thinking, as well as relating this to a discussion about travelling to other places. It deals with Swedish travellers going to Britain, and central Europe, to view differently organised trades with elaborate division of labour, more skilled artisans, fitted<br />into a commercial economy.

Occasional Poetry and Politics in Dagligt Allehanda 1770 This article discusses three different examples of occasional poems that deviate from the traditional function and form of the genre. In the late 1760s, Sweden saw the launch of its first daily newspaper, Dagligt Allehanda [The Daily Variety]. During the ensuing decades the content of the newspapers differed from that of today: a large number of poems were included, on average one per day. Traditionally, occasional poetry had a socially preserving function, as it described and reflected ceremonies in the Swedish society of four estates. But the end of the Age of Liberty was a turbulent time in Sweden, socially and politically. The Freedom of Speech Act was passed in 1766 and the periodical press soon became a forum for political discussions in print. It also facilitated a new public sphere, a commoner’s sphere where occasional poetry was employed as a political tool to celebrate people outside the nobility as well as members of other socially and economically successful groups. These new groups required different tropes and virtues; in short, laudation based on a different principles of decorum. The poems and discussions included in this article form examples of how political ideas were introduced into occasional poetry and how the notion of decorum changed when the daily newspapers were used as a public sphere to reach a new and broader audience for the poems.
