Bonjour Contiki: A Case Study of a DNS-Based Discovery Service for the Internet of Things

Abstract: Abstract. With the integration of everyday objects and sensors into the Internet, users gain new possibilities to directly interact with their environment. This integration is facilitated by the development of tiny IP stacks that enable a direct Internet connection for resource constrained devices. To provide users with the same level of usability that is predominant in the current Internet infrastructure, a self-configured discovery service for sensors and objects is needed. We thus present a use case of a di… Show more

“…Two implementations of CoAP are used in experiments. Erbium [8] is a Contiki based CoAP implementation, which is used inside the 6LoWPAN for SAs; and JAVA based Californium 4 is used to implement the DA and UA. All simulations consist of 36 Tmote Sky nodes where one node acts as a border router to connect the COOJA-based 6LoWPAN to the DA running as Linux process via the Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP).…”

“…uBonjour [8] is bonjour's compact variant, based on mDNS and DNS-SD. Even though mDNS/DNS-SD message sizes were recently optimised for 6LoWPANs [9], uBonjour still relies on the availability of IP multicast and entails more communication [4] employs SSLP inside the 6LoWPAN and provides interoperability with SLP by using a Translation agent (TA).…”

“…Different strategies have been developed to solve different problems with various trade-offs. Biologically inspired [14], traditional P2P [8], DNS-based solutions [15], and Web-based solutions [16] are few of the most popular approaches.…”

“…Segundo Klauck and Kirsche [14],é importante que exista um mecanismo de descoberta, baseado no protocolo IP, e a habilidade de autoconfiguração para lidar com um grande número de coisas se conectandoà Internet das Coisas. Neste trabalho, a solução utilizada (apresentada na Seção 3), para a descoberta automática e autoconfiguração, são os mecanismos do protocolo Zeroconf: Multicast DNS 2 (mDNS) e DNS Service Discovery (DNS-S).…”
