Extracurricular activities in classical colleges were, in our view, an integral component of the education of the students in these institutions—the future lay and religious elite. The case study that we present here concerns Saint Boniface College, in Manitoba. We drew on yearbooks from 1885 to 1967. Out of these documents a portrait of the various non-academic activities offered to students emerges. We found no fewer than 87 extracurricular activities. Their primary purpose was not simply to fill students’ schedules. They served as stimulants for team spirit, a certain notion of masculinity based on a francophone and Catholic identity, a means of exceeding one’s own capabilities, and a complementary means of achieving physical, moral, and intellectual growth
