Bone Marrow Abnormalities Detected by Magnetic Resonance Imaging as Initial Sign of Hematologic Malignancies

Abstract: The increasing use of radiological examination, especially magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), will probably increase the risk of unintended discovery of bone marrow abnormalities in patients where a hematologic disease would not be expected. In this paper we present four patients with different hematologic malignancies of nonplasma cell types. In all patients the MRI bone marrow abnormalities represent an initial presentation of the disease. These case reports illustrate the importance of a careful diagnostic f… Show more

“…Malignancies that can present with bone marrow signal abnormality include acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute promyelocytic leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia, and infiltrative lymphoma ( 15 , 16 ). Of these, B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia is most commonly associated with STIR bone marrow abnormality, and may occur prior to lymphoblast detection in the peripheral blood.…”

“…Although characteristic imaging findings of bone marrow infiltration by malignant cells have been extensively studied on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (711), there have been few reports of CT findings of bone marrow infiltration in patients with AML. Although bone marrow CT attenuation has been known to sometimes increase in patients with myeloproliferative disorders, there has only been one case report that described increased bone marrow CT attenuation in a patient with AML (12).…”

“…The usefulness of femoral marrow MRI has been reported in several studies; 2 , 3 , 15 - 17 however, there have been few reports on femoral marrow MRI for BM involvement. Recently, most MRI reports related to NHL have determined the stage.…”
