Phenolic compounds are considered one of the most important secondary metabolites categories in plant that involved in allelopathic effect. Allelopathy is a chemical interaction between plants and could be defined as the stimulatory or inhibitory effects of a plant on the growth of another plant through the release of secondary compounds. The phenolic compounds, in orange juice peel waste (ORPW), olive oil mill waste (OLMW) and mango leaves waste (MLW), were extracted, then identified and determined by HPLC. The allelopathic effect of ORPW, OLMW and MLW aqueous extracts, at successive concentrations, was examined on germination and growth of two weed species (Phalaris minor Retz. and Malva parviflora L.) in petri dishes and pots bioassays. The main detected phenolic compounds were ferulic, chrysin, sinapic, p-hydroxybenzoic, quercetin and rosmarinic in ORPW extract, vanillic, cateachin, rutin, protocatechuic and gallic in MLW extract, and gallic, pcoumaric, protocatechuic, p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic and ferulic in OLMW extract. The aqueous extracts of ORPW recorded the highest concentration of phenolic compounds and were the most effective in inhibition the germination and growth of both weed species followed by MLW and OLMW in petri dishes and pots trails. It can be concluded that the aqueous extracts of ORPW and MLW wastes have high contents of phenolic acids and could be utilized in controlling weeds as natural herbicides.

AIM: The study aimed to evaluate serum vitamin D concentrations among neonates with pneumonia. METHODS: This case-control study enrolled 33 neonates with pneumonia in addition to 30 healthy controls. CBC, CRP, Serum vitamin D and Pentraxin 3 levels were measured for all participants. RESULTS: There was significant difference between patients and controls regarding Hemoglobin levels, TLC and CRP (p value < 0.01, = 0.002, < 0.01 respectively). Patients with pneumonia showed significant lower levels of Vit. D (9 ± 2.1) compared to controls (14.1 ± 2.8), P value < 0.01. However, patient group had significant higher levels of Pentraxin 3 (29.1 ± 4.8) compared with controls (12.6 ± 3), P value < 0.01. Moreover, mechanically ventilated patients revealed significant lower vit D (7.7 ± 1.8) and higher pentraxin 3 (32.2 ± 2.6) compared to patients on free oxygen (9.1 ± 2.1, 26.4 ± 3.7 respectively), P value = 0.05, 0.02 respectively. Regarding hospital stay, it had significant positive correlation with serum pentraxin 3 (r = 0.6, P value < 0.01) and significant negative correlation with serum vit D (r = -0.4, P value = 0.04). Finally a significant negative correlation between serum levels of vitamin D and Pentraxin 3 was found (r = -0.4, P value = 0.01). CONCLUSION: Lower concentration of serum vitamin D may be significantly associated with neonatal pneumonia. It also can predict the need for mechanical ventilation and duration of hospital stay in neonatal pneumonia. Similarly, higher levels of Pentraxin 3 may be used as an indicator for mechanical ventilation need and a longer hospital stay in neonates with pneumonia.

Vitamin D and calcium both play a significant role in bone mineralisation and preservation. It is involved in multiple cell cycle steps with deficiency or excess depending on multiple factors such as geological area, sun presentation and adequate intake. Its deficiency is a global issue with a prevalence of over one billion people, being more common in children of growing age. During the early phase of childhood, increased participation in sports competitions and the resulting skeletal under-mineralisation would result in a high fracture rate. 1,2 It has for some time been realised that extreme vitamin D inadequacy causes rickets, bone deformations and low bone mineralisation. 3 It also reduces muscle activity and can increase the risk of falls and fractures.
