Bone Density of the Femur and Fiber Cross-Sectional Area and Oxidative Enzyme Activity of the Tibialis Anterior Muscle in Type II Collagen-Induced Arthritic Mice

Abstract: Femur bone densities and tibialis anterior muscle properties of type II collagen-induced arthritic mice were determined. Furthermore, voluntary running activities of arthritic mice were compared with those of controls. Arthritis was induced by an intradermal injection of type II collagen in the adjuvant. Body and muscle weights were lower in arthritic mice than in controls. Cortical and trabecular bone densities and muscle fiber crosssectional areas were decreased by arthritis. After classifying the arthritic … Show more

“…To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate the time course of the occurrence of muscle atrophy, defined as decreased muscle fiber cross‐sectional area, during the development of chronic arthritis in an animal model. This muscle wasting caused by chronic disease has been demonstrated in several studies , , , and additional investigations on its molecular mechanisms have been reported , . There are evidences of the involvement of the ubiquitin–proteasome pathway, as indicated by increased expression of MuRF‐1 and MAFbx , , and downregulation of growth factors .…”

“…Similar findings have been observed in animal models with unloading-and disuse-induced muscle atrophy. For example, a previous study 28) observed that the decreased tibialis anterior muscle weight, muscle fiber atrophy, and lower femur bone density found in type collagen-induced arthritic mice were related to their low motor activities.…”
