Bone Cancer

Abstract: Primary bone cancers are extremely rare neoplasms, accounting for fewer than 0.2% of all cancers. The evaluation and treatment of patients with bone cancers requires a multidisciplinary team of physicians, including musculoskeletal, medical, and radiation oncologists, and surgeons and radiologists with demonstrated expertise in the management of these tumors. Long-term surveillance and follow-up are necessary for the management of treatment late effects related to surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. … Show more

“…The patient should then be staged for extent of disease; guidelines for initial evaluation of a suspected distal femur osteosarcoma include plain radiographs and MRI of the femur, CT scan of the chest, and either technetium-99m-methyl diphosphonate (Tc-99m MDP) whole-body bone scan or PET-CT scan. 15 Additionally, a bone or soft-tissue biopsy is performed to provide a definitive diagnosis; this is usually performed after MRI so that the imaging can help guide the biopsy location. It can be prior to remaining staging studies to avoid unnecessary radiation exposure in case a benign diagnosis is made.…”

“…Osteosarcoma(OS) is the most common primary malignant bone tumor, which mainly affects children and adolescents [1]. The prognosis of patients with osteosarcoma can be improved with the combination of surgery and chemotherapy, and the 5-year survival rate has reached 60% to 70% in recent years [2].…”

“…[4,5] Wide surgical excision has been the cornerstone of management of chordomas of the mobile spine and sacrum. [6] While surgery can improve overall survival and has been associated with improved disease-free and local recurrence-free survival, it can result in significant morbidity and functional consequences, particularly when high sacrectomy is required. [4,[7][8][9] Moreover, local recurrence rates in some surgical series are as high as 50-100% with subtotal resection compared to 0-53% with en bloc resection with clear margins.…”
