Bone and cortical bone thickness of mandibular buccal shelf for mini-screw insertion in adults

Abstract: Specific sites of the MBS offer enough bone quantity and adequate bone quality for mini-screw insertion. The insertion site with the optimal anatomic characteristics is the buccal bone corresponding to the distal root of second molar, with screw insertion 4 mm buccal to the cementoenamel junction. Considering the cortical bone thickness of optimal insertion sites, pre-drilling is always recommended in order to avoid high insertion torque.

“…Furthermore, for many other surgical procedures, the overall dimension of the mandible is crucial. This is the case in the removal of wisdom teeth, in the application of buccal mini screws for orthodontic anchorage and of course in orthognathic surgery [25][26][27]. Therefore, this study used CBCTs to assess the intraosseous course of the IAN, the bone thickness between the lateral wall of the mandibular canal and the buccal border of the mandibular cortical plate and the position of the mental foramen in relation to the neighbouring teeth.…”

“…8 The investigation of bone anatomy is important in many branches of Dentistry, influencing surgical planning, 6,9 dental implant rehabilitation outcome, 10 and selection of the best positioning for skeletal anchorage, which improves orthodontic mechanics. 11 However, information regarding bone thickness in the apical region of maxillary and mandibular teeth is scarce, though very important for endodontic purposes, specially for the surgical planning in paraendodontic surgery.…”

“…The volume rendering was reoriented and modified applying transparency, in order to obtain a conventional latero-lateral cephalograms imagines ( Figure 2). [23] On volume-derived cephalograms conventional cephalometric analysis was performed and Frankfurtmandibular plane angle was calculated (figure 3).…”
