Environmental concerns and governmental policies have paved the path for a rapid shift from petrol-powered to electric vehicles (EVs). The prime technological requirement is the advancement of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) to satisfy the everyday habits of the society for relinquishing the well-established petrol-powered vehicles. Despite the generously increased research funds to facilitate breakthroughs to the next generation of renewable power sources for EVs, the available strategies of research are not satisfactorily practical. On the other hand, recent reports stressing the scarcity of lithium have raised the concern about a possible lithium deficit or increasing cost. These all have caused a sentiment for moving beyond LIBs. Although the emerging hype is the result of a misconception about the scarcity of lithium, again, there is no practical research strategy to make this breakthrough within the present critical time frame of transition to EVs. This article attempts to answer some common questions. Are there sufficient lithium resources? Can a lithium deficient halt the EV industry? Is it necessary to move beyond LIBs? Is the research on the right track? Is the taxpayers' money efficiently invested for the targeted purpose?

Energy is vital to reduce poverty and improve social and economic development. For more than a century, modern economies have based their growth on fossil fuels, which has led to global warming, environmental pollution, and social problems. In accordance with the Paris Agreement (2015), governments have committed to evaluating their energy systems to seek appropriate solutions to support their decarbonization and keep global warming well below 2 o C. In order to achieve this objective, developing countries are making considerable efforts, among which is considered a shift to the use of renewable energy sources to satisfy their growing demand. Despite the current development and planning for the sector, there is room for improvement within the long-term planning and evaluation of energy systems. This paper analyses the difference between fossilbased and renewable-based growth in terms of economics, technical and environmental effects in Bolivia. To do so, all the country's energy sectors, including electricity, heat, and mobility, are covered and optimized through the open-source energy system modeling framework EnergyScope. Results showed a sustainable energy scenario in 2035, which accounted for 66% of renewable share and 44.64 e/tCO 2-eq. related to a compensation value for the difference with the business-as-usual scenario based on future government plans. This work demonstrated that a Bolivian energy system with a high share of renewable resources is possible, leading to energy sovereignty addressing climate change.

Este trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar mediante un análisis bibliométrico la contribución científica latinoamericana en la temática de los vehículos eléctricos, utilizando las investigaciones indexadas en la Web of Science (WOS) en el periodo 2001-2019. Los resultados muestran poca contribución de los países latinoamericanos, sus organizaciones y autores, además de un bajo enfoque hacia las investigaciones sobre las baterías de litio. Lo que permite concluir que las organizaciones y agencias de financiamiento científico de la región deberían potenciar las investigaciones en la temática, favoreciendo los proyectos que proponga amplias redes de colaboración que permita una rápida transferencia de conocimiento.
