Várias vezes, desde o Pentateuco até o Apocalipse, os escritores bíblicos vindicam que foram inspirados por Deus em sua obra. Por conseguinte, desde que estes escritos foram aceitos como sagrados, a crença de que as Escrituras foram divinamente inspiradas têm estado presente entre judeus e cristãos. Porém, entre as diferentes correntes do Cristianismo não existe um consenso sobre o que a inspiração divina da Sagrada Escritura significa. Isto acontece porque, em nenhuma parte da Bíblia, há uma descrição detalhada desse conceito. São analisadas neste artigo as duas principais teorias: a) a da inspiração natural, fruto do liberalismo teológico que surgiu no século XVIII; e b) a da inspiração verbal, fruto do fundamentalismo evangélico surgido no final do século XIX. A presente pesquisa ocupa-se de apresentar o ensinamento, as limitações e os problemas de ambas as teorias, sugerindo, ao final, uma proposta de um conceito de inspiração que busca se aproximar ao máximo daquilo que as Escrituras trazem sobre o tema, ainda que em lampejos. Longe de pretender ser a palavra final sobre o assunto, este estudo procura mostrar como um conceito de inspiração biblicamente coerente pode contribuir para uma exegese, uma hermenêutica, uma teologia e, consequentemente uma evangelização saudáveis.
