Body size, maturation and motor performance in young soccer players: relationship to technical actions in small-sided games

Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the relative contributions of body size, skeletal age, and motor performance variables with technical actions through an ecological model during small-sided soccer games, and the interaction of biological maturation with technical and motor performance in young players. “…Among these younger players, morphological characteristics influenced the degree of a player's centrality or pass connectivity with teammates.In this context, taller U-13 players were those who established more connections with their teammates, had greater ability to send and/or access information to other nodes of the network and were preferentially chosen to receive passes, suggesting that older soccer players with early maturation in this age category were preferentially selected to be central players by other teammates, seemingly due to their greater probability of offensive success in light of advantages provided by their early maturation.
