Background: This study aimed to identify and describe indicators of depression, anxiety, body dissatisfaction, and risk of an eating disorder in patients who undergo plastic surgery. Methods: The sample was made up of 90 patients from a private clinic in Lima, Peru, with ages between 20 and 50 years. The participants were asked to answer the Aaron Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), the Aaron Beck Anxiety Inventory, the Body Shape Questionnaire, and the Abbreviated and Modified Eating Attitudes Scale (EAT - 26M). Results: Through data analysis with the SPSS statistical program, it was found that 80% of patients who access plastic surgery are women, and the average age is 32.4 years. Likewise, of the total sample, no anxiety traits have been identified; however, 3.3% present traits of moderate depression, pathological body discomfort, and risk of an eating disorder. Conclusion: The presurgical psychological evaluation in plastic surgery patients is crucial because it allows for the identification of predisposing factors to mental health problems and proposes support if needed.

La autoimagen es un término que denomina el accionar del ser humano donde este pretende y alcanza a desarrollar ideas, pensamientos, emociones, percepciones y visiones de sí mismo. El objetivo del estudio ha evaluar la valoración nutricional antropométrica y la autopercepción de imagen corporal de adolescentes del cantón Pillaro, utilizando una metodología con diseño no experimental, corte transversal correlacional en la cual se trabajó con una muestra de 245 participantes (57.1 % mujeres y 42.9.% varones) abarcando edades de entre los 10 y 20 años de edad que llenaron encuestas de forma virtual de Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), el Test De Actitudes Alimentarias (EAT-26) y el Índice de Masa Corporal (IMC), obteniéndose resultados a partir de las encuestan llenadas, en donde se indica que el 38.8% de adolescentes no sienten preocupación por la imagen corporal, el 61.2% no mostró riesgo en la variable relacionada con trastornos alimentarios, se constató además, que en la población de Pillaro no existe un grado de disparidad entre la percepción del autoimagen corporal versus la realidad del individuo, sin embargo si se visualizó que en las mujeres predominan mayoritariamente estas distorsiones que en los hombres, por lo tanto, factores como edad, sexo y medio social están altamente relacionados con la autopercepción, desencadenando trastornos alimentarios, trastornos psicológicos y físicos; en base a lo mencionado previamente, se llega a la resolución de que la imagen corporal lleva una relación ínfimamente estrecha con los trastornos de alimentación que padecen los adolescentes en la actualidad dependiendo del lugar donde la población adolescente se encuentre, afirmándose la hipótesis planteada al inicio de la investigación.

Harmful consumption and alcohol dependence in Peruvian university students with body dissatisfaction – an observational study

The abuse of alcoholic beverages is associated with complex mental health disorders, including body dissatisfaction (BD); that form a vicious circle that is very difficult for the person who suffers from them to overcome. The objective of our study was to evaluate the association between the abuse of alcohol consumption and the degree of body dissatisfaction in young women, in four universities in northern Peru. An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 491 university students. Body dissatisfaction and alcohol consumption was analysed using the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), a test designed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a simple screening method for its specific use in primary care settings, using the score greater than six that predicts harmful use or alcohol dependence. The prevalence of harmful consumption or alcohol dependence was higher in those women who presented body dissatisfaction with respect to the group without concern for their image, adjusted for type of university and family structure. (Adjusted PR: 2.33, 95% CI 2.10 - 2.57). In turn, university students who belonged to a reconstituted family obtained 6.82 more points (95% CI: 4.47 to 9.17) in the AUDIT test. Young women with body dissatisfaction are twice as likely to have harmful use/higher alcohol dependence even in single-parent or reconstituted families.
