BODY MOVEMENT IN RELATION TO TYPE OF INFORMATION (PERSON- AND NONPERSON-ORIENTED) AND COGNITIVE STYLE (FIELD DEPENDENCE)1

Abstract: The occurrence of body-focused (self-touching) and object-focused ("free") movements was investigated in a semistructured interview involving two communicative tasks-person-oriented and nonperson-oriented and two types of encoders (fielddependent and field-independent). Person-oriented information was accompanied by more continuous body touching movements (p < ,001) and nonrepresentational (speech primacy) movements (p < .01). Representational (motor primacy) movements were more prevalent during the communicat… Show more

“…The difficulties of transmitting nonverbal, analogic information into a digital, verbal code are well known (cf. Sousa-Posa & Rohrberg, 1977;Wilden, 1972aWilden, , 1972b. While delays and distortions occur in the interhemispheric transmission of information, the brain hemispheres do not function in complete isolation.…”

“…In this context it is appropriate to mention some studies in which arousal states are asso-ciated with observable behaviour. Body touching behaviour is considered to be indicative of the degree of anxiety or arousal in normal subjects (28,31,32) or the degree of uncertainty encoutered in the encoding process (32,35). Head movements are reported to occur relative to the stream of speech (36,37) and to be related to elements of speech such as stress, juncture, tone, etc (38).…”
