Background: The UK will host the Paralympics in 2012 and the Commonwealth Games in 2014 showcasing the talents of elite athletes and aiming to inspire the population to become involved. However, low levels of physical activity are prevalent: only 40% of men and 28% of women meet the minimum UK physical activity recommendations. The population of people with limb absence is no exception. Objectives: To determine if people with amputation are participating in physical activity and sport; whether post-amputation activity levels match pre-amputation levels; and if there are motivations and barriers to participation. Study Design: Literature review. Methods: Five reviewers systematically searched all peer reviewed and gray literature in seven bibliographic databases and the Cochrane Library. Results: Following rigorous elimination, 12 articles were finally included in the review and critically appraised. Four themes were identified: components; rehabilitation outcomes; body image; and motivations and barriers to participation. Conclusion: People with limb absence are not participating in physical activity conducive to health benefits, and only a minority participate in exercise and sports. Participation following amputation does not mirror that of pre-amputation levels, and more barriers than motivations exist to adopting or maintaining a physically active lifestyle. Clinical relevance This literature review aims to inform those involved in rehabilitation and ongoing care of those with limb absence about what motivates or precludes their participation in physical activity, exercise and sport. Such knowledge could be applied to improving health and wellbeing in this population.

Amaç: Fizyoterapist gözlemi altında yaptırılan egzersiz programının tek taraflı diz üstü amputelerde protezle ilgili memnuniyet düzeyi üzerine etkisinin araştırılmasıydı.Yöntemler: Çalışmaya yaş ortalamaları 39.3±12.8 yıl olan 19 unilateral diz üstü ampute katıldı. Olguların sosyodemografik, klinik ve proteze ait özellikleri kaydedildi. Olgular 10 seans boyunca egzersiz programına katıldı. Olgular, program bittikten sonra da egzersizlere devam ettiler. Protezin rahatlığı, görünüşü, ağırlığı ve protezle yürümeye ilişkin hastaların memnuniyet düzeyi tedavi öncesi ve tedaviden 2 ay sonra olmak üzere Vizüel Analog Skalası (VAS) ile değerlendirildi. Sonuçlar:Tedavi öncesi ve sonrası değerlendirmeler karşılaştırıldığında protezin rahatlığı (p=0.048), görünüşü (p=0.010) ve protezle yürüme (p=0.033) ile ilgili hastaların memnuniyet düzeyleri arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulundu.Tartışma: Çalışmamızda, tek taraflı diz üstü amputelere uygulanan egzersiz programı, amputelerin protezle ilgili memnuniyet düzeylerini olumlu yönde etkilemiştir.Anahtar Kelimeler: Ampute; hasta memnuniyeti; rehabilitasyon; egzersiz; fizyoterapi RESEARCH ARTICLE THE EFFECTS OF EXERCISE PROGRAM ON SATISFACTION LEVEL IN UNILATERAL ABOVE KNEE AMPUTEES ABSTRACTPurpose: To investigate the effects of exercise program performed under the supervision of a physiotherapist, on prosthetic satisfaction level in unilateral above knee amputees.Methods: 19 unilateral above knee amputees, with the mean age of 39.3±12.8 years were enrolled in this study. The sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and properties of the prostheses of the participants were recorded. All cases attended to a 10 session exercise program. They continued the exercises after the program finished. The satisfaction level of the patients concerning comfort, appearance weight of the prosthesis and walking with prosthesis were assessed by Visual Analog Scale (VAS) before and 2 months after the treatment. Results:When compared pre and post-treatment results, comfort of the prosthesis (p=0.048), satisfaction with the appearence of prosthesis (p=0.01), and walking ability (p=0.033) were statistically different. Discussion:In the present study, it is demonstrated that the exercise program affected prosthetic satisfaction levels positively in unilateral above knee amputees.

ResumenIntroducción: el esquema corporal es la representación abstracta que las personas perciben de su cuerpo en el espacio situándolo con una amplia participación propioceptiva. Además, se modifica a medida que el deportista recibe estímulos somatosensoriales y sociales con el fin de perfeccionar el gesto deportivo. Objetivo: este documento hace parte del marco teórico del estudio "Imagen corporal en futbolistas", y tiene como objetivo describir la influencia del esquema corporal en el rendimiento deportivo y cómo influye el deporte en su estructuración. materiales y métodos: búsqueda bibliográfica en las bases de datos Pubmed, Science Direct, Lilacs, Proquest, Ovid y PEDro de publicaciones registradas en el periodo 1998-2014. Se obtuvieron un total de 120 artículos, de los cuales 48 fueron seleccionados. Objective: this document is part of the theoretical framework of the study "Body image in soccer players", and aims to describe the influence of body schema on sports performance and how sports influence in structuring. materials and methods: bibliographic search in the databases Pubmed, Science Direct, Lilacs, Proquest, Ovid and PEDro of publications registered in the period 1998-2014. A total of 120 articles were obtained, of which 48 were selected.
