Body composition analysis by leg‐to‐leg bioelectrical impedance and dual‐energy X–ray absorptiometry in non‐obese and obese individuals

Abstract: Compared with DXA, the leg-to-leg Tanita TBF-215 analyser accurately assessed body composition in a heterogeneous group of both sexes. In the very obese women (BMI > 35 kg/m(2)), BIA measurements should be viewed with caution.

“…Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a practical and good alternative 40,41 with established validity and reliability in the assessment of body composition. [42][43][44] The use of built-in software to assess BF% with weight, height, age, and sex as additional parameters improved the accuracy of body composition measurement and with a precision error similar to dual x-ray absorptiometry and underwater weighing. 45 The BIA instrument used in our study has limitation in differentiating regional fat from total FM.…”

“…Patients' weights were obtained using a Tanita BC-418 pro-segmental bodyfat analyser, which was kindly loaned to us for this study (Tanita UK Ltd, West Drayton, UK). This measures body composition with a validated 4-compartment model as recently described [35]. We asked subjects not to eat for 2 hours prior to measurement, and empty their bladder before the start of the measurements.…”
