Board independence and firm internationalization: a meta-analysis

Abstract: Purpose Despite agency theory and resource dependence theory suggesting that – albeit through different mechanisms – board independence positively influences firm internationalization, empirical evidence on this relationship has been mixed and inconclusive. Based on this, the purpose of the present study is twofold: first, to analyze and synthesize the existing empirical literature and, second, to develop new theoretical insights on the effect of board independence on firm internationalization. Design/method… Show more

“…To verify the OLS findings, the two-stage system GMM was employed to mitigate the potential endogeneity issues. GMM is considered a more reliable method than standard OLS regression because it controls for unobserved heterogeneity, potential endogeneity and the influence of past firm performance or diversification strategies by time-demeaning the variables in the first-difference transformation and instrumenting the endogenous variables with multiple lags in the analysis (Chen et al ., 2011; Larcker and Rusticus, 2010; Matolcsy and Wright, 2011; Wintoki et al ., 2012; Spadafora et al ., 2022). It is also robust to potential serial correlation and heteroscedasticity.…”

“…Within the framework of RDT, the primary role of the BOD is to act as a linkage to the environment, playing a crucial role in managing external dependencies (Pfeffer and Salancik, 1978). Thus, through the lens of RDT, the composition of BOD is one of the key determinants of international performance, influencing its capacity to mitigate risks in new markets and discover new and effective tools for their management (Rivas, 2012;Spadafora et al, 2022;Nam et al, 2018).…”
