BNT162b2 Messenger RNA Vaccination Did Not Prevent an Outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Variant 501Y.V2 in an Elderly Nursing Home but Reduced Transmission and Disease Severity

Abstract: We report an outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 501Y.V2 in a nursing home. All non-vaccinated residents (5/5) versus half of those vaccinated with BNT162b2 (13/26) were infected. Two of 13 vaccinated versus 4 of 5 non-vaccinated residents presented severe disease. BNT162b2 did not prevent the outbreak, but reduced transmission and disease severity.

“…Similar results were found on mRNA vaccines when the BNT162b2 vaccine effectiveness studied in a cohort was 72% [ 89 ] and mRNA-1273 elicited sera showed significant neutralization despite reduced titers [ 90 ]. The fact that vaccination with BNT162b2 halved the cases and reduced severity in a COVID-19 outbreak indicates protection and diminished transmission [ 91 ].…”

“…Males were more likely to develop severe forms of disease as compared to females, as has been shown elsewhere. 24 B.1.351 outbreaks and severe outcomes have recently been described among residents who had received two doses of BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine in a LTCF in eastern France, separate to those included in our study, 25 and in a LTCF in Canada. 26 However, none of these studies provided vaccine effectiveness estimates based on available data.…”

“…Nosocomial infection with SARS-CoV-2 has been reported in the UK, 36,37 including many health care workers infected at their workplace. 38,39 Here we would emphasise strongly that data from ourselves and others indicate that even if infected peri-or post-vaccination, the course of COVID-19 is much less severe in vaccinated vs. unvaccinated individuals; [40][41][42][43][44] and -acknowledging that a small percentage of vaccinated and symptomatic individuals were tested -our data demonstrated only 150 cases of confirmed infection (1%) in 14,842 tested individuals from over 1 million vaccinated app users. It is also possible that individuals changed their behaviour immediately after vaccination, increasing infection risk and contracting SARS-CoV-2 prior to acquiring adequate immunity.…”
