Bluff Body Drag Control using Synthetic Jet

Abstract: The paper presents the results of an experimental investigation wherein the bullet form drag force as a function of oscillating actuator frequency, various voltage and for different orifice/slot configuration are studied. In order to perform the experiment, an axisymmetric bullet shape model with ellipsoidal nose was used in wind tunnel. The synthetic jet actuator was used to flow control at sharp cut end. The experiment was conducted in a wind tunnel with a working diameter of 1000 mm and a maximum velocity o… Show more

“…All computations of the present study are performed on a finite volume method-based commercial solver Ansys-Fluent 18 . Literature 3, [19][20][21][22][23][24] shows that the S-A turbulence model offers significantly good computational results closer to the experimental data. In the S-A turbulence model, one transport equation is solved for variable modified turbulent viscosity ( υ  ).…”

“…C D considered to be a quasi-constant value. However, Gil [8] shows that at lower velocities (15 m s −1 ), it does not have linear connection with F D . Furthermore, C D should be a time averaged value, due to vortex shedding.…”

“…The SJ has many applications and can be used in electronic cooling [1,3], mixing enhancement [4,5], flow control [6][7][8], or underwater propulsion systems [9,10]. Especially the first area of the SJ application is now developed and new types of actuators [11,12] are still developed to increase the efficiency of the cooling system.…”
