Blue photobiomodulation LED therapy impacts SARS‐CoV‐2 by limiting its replication in Vero cells

Abstract: The study of any intervention able to counteract SARS‐CoV‐2 pandemic is considerably envisaged. It was previously shown, in in vitro models of infections, that the LED blue light is able to decrease the viral load of HSV‐1 and ZIKV. In our study, LED photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) at blue wavelengths (450, 454 and 470 nm) was tested in an in vitro model of SARS‐CoV‐2 infection, employing three experimental settings: SARS‐CoV‐2 was irradiated and then transferred to cells; already infected cells were irradia… Show more

“…[18], [19] PBM is also found to interfere with a pathogen's ability to replicate [20] through innate immune response (via reactive ion species, [ROS]) and over longer intervals by regulating adaptive immune response. Other light wavelengths can damage pathogens directly, [21], [22], [23] albeit not transdermally in deep tissue or viscera.…”

“…Recently, the impact of blue light (450, 454, and 470 nm) on SARS-CoV-2 inactivation was reported [102]. Furthermore, a recent case report suggested the therapeutic potential of phototherapy with a red light (630 + 660 nm) for the alleviation of respiratory symptoms, pulmonary inflammation, and hypoxia [103].…”

“…SARS-CoV-2, previously isolated in the BSL3 facility of the San Polo hospital (ASUGI, Monfalcone, GO, Italy) from the supernatant of infected Vero E6 cell line (epithelial kidney normal cell line from Cercopithecus aethiops , ATCC CRL-1586), was employed in the aerosolization ( Supplementary Information File S1 ) [ 50 , 51 ]. The virus was quantified by using a standard plaque forming unit (PFU) assay [ 52 ].…”
