The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of different light emitting diodes (LEDs) on growth, photosynthetic characteristic and chloroplast ultrastructure of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) seedlings. Seedlings of the cultivar Sumian 22 were grown under seven different lights including blue (B) plus red (R) LEDs BR (1:8, 1:3, 1:1, 3:1), B LEDs, R LEDs and fluorescent lamps (FL) with the 100 μ mol m -2 s -1 photosynthesis photon flux (PPF) and a 12 hour photoperiod for 40 days. Compared with FL, fresh mass, dry mass, root length, stem width, root activity, length of palisade tissue and stomatal frequencies were significantly greater as well as the thickest grana lamella in chloroplast in seedlings grown under BR1:8 LEDs; The chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll contents, photosynthetic rate, leaf thickness, spongy tissue length and stomatal areas were highest in seedlings under B LEDs; The stem length, leaf area, sucrose, soluble sugar and starch concentrations were highest as well as the greatest number and volume of starch grains in chloroplast in seedlings under R LEDs. It was suggested that BR1:8 LEDs might be used as a primary light for the cultivation of upland cotton seedlings under controlled conditions.

Heterotrophic activity in macroalgae has been little studied, but the red macroalga Grateloupia doryphora is known to grow in light at a higher rate in a glycerol-containing medium than in seawater. The effects of 0.1 M exogenous glycerol in seawater (SW90-gly) on the respiration rate of G. doryphova and the role played by light were investigated. The algae pretreated for 2 h in the light and in SW90-gly evolved oxygen and fixed carbon dioxide ( H~~c o , ) , but also evolved radioactive I4co2 from [L4~]glycerol. The rate of oxygen evolution was lower than that of samples in seawater, due to a high respiration rate and/or a partial inhibition of photosynthesis induced ~U L I L I~J L , LLLC t a~c ui i i i u i~a i i i c c o i v v i i i i n a i i u i i v v a~ i i i s i i c i 11non-photosynthetic patterns were operating. In darkness, after pretreatment in the light in SW90-gly, samples showed a high oxygen uptake rate just after the light was turned off. Twenty minutes of darkness were enough to decrease this high respiration rate to that of samples in seawater. The oxygen uptake observed in al1 experiments with glycerol was mitochondrial as it was inhibited by potassium a cyanide and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM). Pretreatment of samples in the light in SW90-gly with the photosynthetic inhibitor DCMU ! .did not inhibit ensuing dark respiration, thus providing evidence for a non-photosynthetic effect of the light. The highest dark respiration E rate was observed after the samples were pretreated in monochromatic blue light in glycerol-containing media.

A delay in cell division was observed when synchronized cultures of the unicellular green alga Chiamydomonas reinhardtii growing under heterotrophic conditions were exposed to white light during the second half of the growth period. This effect was also observed when photosynthesis was blocked by addition of the photosystem 11 inhibitor 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea. Light pulses of 10 minutes were sufficient to induce a delay in cell division in the presence or absence of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea. A delay in cell division was induced by blue light but not by illumination with red or far-red light. The equal intensity action spectrum revealed two peaks at 400 and 500 nm.Photoautotrophically growing cultures of unicellular green algae can be synchronized by alternating periods of light and darkness (18,20,23). In the case of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, synchronization by light/dark cycling was also achieved in the presence of acetate (8,26), which is metabolized by this phytoflagellate. C reinhardtii cultures synchronized in the presence of acetate continue to divide synchronously for one cell cycle period when transferred to heterotrophic growth conditions (26). This finding enabled us to investigate the differential effects of light on cell growth and cell division. Illumination at the beginning of the growth period caused an increased growth rate. As a consequence, the cells entered the division phase earlier than dark-grown cells (26). However, when the cultures were exposed to light after the cells had doubled their mass, a considerable delay in cell division was observed, which was accompanied by an extended growth period (26). The light-induced delay in cell division was also observed in the presence of DCMU, an inhibitor of PSII.These observations indicate that the transition from cell growth to cell division is regulated by a light/dark-responsive cell cycle switch in C. reinhardtii (26) and that photosynthesis is apparently not involved in this process. Therefore, we have investigated which wavelengths and intensities of light are effective in inducing a delay in cell division.
