Blue and Red Luminescence from Europium‐Doped Barium TetraBorate Crystals

Abstract: The structural and spectroscopic properties of Barium tetraborate crystals activated with Eu3+ ion have been studied. Differential thermal analysis, X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and SEM techniques have been used for structural characterization. The XRD pattern revealed the formation of α‐BaB4O7 crystals. It was observed that under the proposed charge compensation model, the structural properties of the α‐BaB4O7 crystal significantly alter the luminescence characteristics of Eu3+ and Eu2+ ions. The enhancement of t… Show more

“…This problem can be solved to some extent by co-doping with Gd ion along with Ce, which causes a shift in yellow-orange range. 95 Divalent Eu ion 96 usually yields blue emission but it can also be tuned in a wide range of green, yellow and red regions, as well. Park et al 97 reported bright green emission in (Ba 1 572 nm.…”

“…It has been reported that if the chemical composition of a glass phase is nonstoichiometric with respect to the corresponding crystal, a surface crystallization tends to take place easily, because a nucleation at the surface of the glass sample occurs more easily than inside the glass sample. Such surface crystallized glasses have improved mechanical strength and often show non-linear optical behavior as well [25,26]. Optical micrograph of the surface crystallized glass ceramic (Zn:Li:TeO 2 ) sample is given in inset of Fig.…”
