Blood vessel remodeling in pig ovarian follicles during the periovulatory period: an immunohistochemistry and SEM-corrosion casting study

Abstract: These data allow us to hypothesize that EPerOFs are in a quiescent status. LPerOFs represent the "metamorphic" follicles that rapidly turn-on angiogenesis to sustain a successful corpus luteum formation. Particularly, it is interesting to underlie that the non-sprouting angiogenesis, typical of structures in rapid neovascularization, occurred only in the LPerOFs. Moreover, vascular geometric relations showed as blood vessel remodeling occurs with the "maximum output and the minimum energetic expense".This know… Show more

“…Morphometric and biochemical analyses were performed on at least 10 different serial sections/animals (3 sections for HE, 3 for vascular area, VA, and 4 for vascular endothelial growth factor, VEGF, expression analysis) [69]. Morphometric data were calculated on at least 8 different fields/sections, randomly distributed in the central (C) or peripheral (P) portion of the implanted area, were blind evaluated.…”

“…There were parallel increases in the expression of VEGFA mRNA in both granulosa and theca. Intriguingly, during early pre-antral follicle growth, there was a positive correlation between the degree of proliferation and vascular area (Martelli et al 2009). From this, it is tempting to speculate that preantral follicular selection is based on vascular supply.…”

“…Not surprisingly, w40% of all proliferating cells in the theca are of endothelial origin (Martelli et al 2009). There were parallel increases in the expression of VEGFA mRNA in both granulosa and theca.…”

“…Its development and maintenance depend on an adequate blood supply (reviewed in Fraser & Wulff (2003)). Prior to ovulation, the basement membrane of growing ovarian follicles constitutes the borderline between the vascularized and non-vascularized follicular compartments (Suzuki et al 1998, Grazul-Bilska et al 2007, Martelli et al 2009, Kowalewski et al 2015. Its rupture during ovulation is followed by rapid spreading of blood vessels into the follicular antrum and establishment of a dense vascular network that in mature CL provides virtually every lutein cell with access to a capillary.…”
