Blood-Tissue Barriers in the Male Reproductive Tract of the Dog: A Morphological Study Using Lanthanum Nitrate as an Electron-Opaque Tracer

Abstract: Blood-tissue barriers preventing an uncontrolled exchange of larger molecules between adjacent but metabolically separate compartments have been demonstrated in various organs. One prominent example is the blood-testis barrier which has been investigated in a number of species. A key function of this barrier is to shield developing germ cells from the immune system in order to avoid autoimmune reactions. This requirement also applies to the male excurrent duct system. Yet, very few investigations have addresse… Show more

“…Male ZO-2 chimera show reduced fertility and pathological changes in the testis. Lanthanum tracer experiments showed a compromised BTB function in these mice 42112. Based on the gene expression and localization analyses, the authors found that the expression level of ZO-1 , ZO-3 , Cldn-11 and Ocln is not apparently affected when compared to the controls.…”

ZO-1 and Ocln still localize to the BTB region, but Cldn-11 and Connexin43 are misslocalized from BTB.…”

“…Considering the inefficiency and the aggressive mode of cancer treatments, numerous efforts were made to find decent therapies with more specificity and safety among them during recent years. The most appropriate candidate in this area is the genes explicitly expressed in the testis tissue while not expressed or little expressed in other healthy tissues of the body [11,12]. Accordingly, testis cancer genes are promising targets for cancer vaccines and immunotherapy.…”
