Blood purity and scientific independence: blood science and postcolonial struggles in Korea, 1926–1975

Abstract: ArgumentAfter World War II, blood groups became a symbol of anti-racial science. This paper aims to shed new light on the post-WWII history of blood groups and race, illuminating the postcolonial revitalization of racial serology in South Korea. In the prewar period, Japanese serologists developed a serological anthropology of Koreans in tandem with Japanese colonialism. The pioneering Korean hematologist Yi Samyŏl , inspired by decolonization movements during the 1960s, excavated and appropriated colonial ser… Show more

“…For instance, Jaehwan Hyun’s research demonstrates that Japanese scientists determined biological superiority based on “scientific” findings achieved through “comparative research on physical and mental traits among Japanese, Korean, and mixed-race children” (2019b: 494). Elsewhere, Hyun also traces—based on Eiji Oguma’s (2002) work A Genealogy of Japanese Self-Images —the historical connection between Japanese and German eugenicists and how Japanese physicians were “inspired by Nazi Germany’s racial hygiene policies” (2019a: 245) to “establish the uniqueness and superiority of the Japanese race, assuming the blood purity” (2019a: 240) of their people.…”
