Blood protein polymorphisms and the gut bacteria: impact of probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus Narine on Salmonella carriage in sheep

Abstract: Related to previous reports on correlations between an animal’s genotype, its commensal microbiota, and the ability to resist infections, the aim of the current study was to investigate the associations between sheep genotype and 5-methylcytosine (5-mC) DNA methylation patterns, sheep genotype and cell surface hydrophobicity of sheep gut commensal bacteria. In addition, the effect of the probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus strain INMIA 9602 Er 317/402 (probiotic formulation Narine) on Salmonella carriage in sh… Show more

“…The term “probiotics” as “active substances that are essential for a healthy development of life” was described by Werner Kollath in 1953 and by Ferdinand Vergin in 1954 [ 59 , 60 ]. Probiotics are alive bacterial cells that, when administered in adequate amounts, benefit the host’s health [ 61 ] and can have a substantial impact on the functionality of human and animal [ 48 , 62 , 63 , 64 , 65 , 66 , 67 ] organisms, as well as on plants [ 68 ]. Plant probiotics are used to increase resistance to pathogens [ 69 ] and improve yields by reducing or even eliminating chemical fertilizers [ 68 ].…”

“…On the other hand, the associations between host physiology and gut bacteria (Khan et al, 2019 ; Ragonnaud and Biragyn, 2021 ; Tsaturyan et al, 2022b ), including host blood characteristics and gut bacteria (Pluznick, 2014 ; Balayan et al, 2015 ; Pepoyan et al, 2015a , 2020c ), gut microbiota composition, and COVID-19-accompanying diseases as well as between host gender and microbiota composition are at the researchers' attention (Pepoyan et al, 2021 ). Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Eubacterium rectale , and Bifidobacteria, the gut commensals with known immunomodulatory potential, were described to be underrepresented in patients with COVID-19.…”
