Blood Pepsinogen and Gastric Erosions in the Rat

Abstract: I N RECENT YEARS much attention has been given to the problem of predicting those who will eventually manifest psychosomatic disorders. With regard to duodenal ulcers, attention has been focused on blood pepsinogen or uropepsin levels as predictors of susceptibility. In a recent review, Mirsky 8 points out that the rate of excretion of pepsinogen in the urine and the concentration of pepsinogen in the blood plasma or serum of patients with duodenal ulcers are greater than those of subjects without gas-

“…In the literature on ulceration in humans, it is not surprising to find that the eontribution of this line of research is not substantial, sinee humans are usually impraetieable subjeets for genetie experimentation. In animal studies, strain and sex differences in ulceration were investigated by Sawrey and Long (1962) and Ader et al (1960). The former investigators, using a eonfliet procedure, found that Nebraskahooded rats, both males and females, and Fig.…”

“…Sines (1959) used this method when he developed a selective-breeding procedure to study differences in ulcer susceptibility. Ader (1960) has used an immobilization technique to study pepsinogen level and strain differences in relation to ulceration.…”

“…But the circadian variation in pepsinogen levels does not seem to account for the results of this second procedure (21). Restraint lowers high, and increases low basal pepsinogen levels.…”
