Blood Lymphocyte Surface Markers and Clinical Findings in Chronic Lymphoproliferative Disorders

Abstract: Surface receptors on peripheral blood lymphocytes have been studied in 43 cases with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), and five cases with lymphoma and overspill. One quarter of the cases with CLL had lymphocytes with no detectable surface immunoglobulin (SIg) by direct fluorescent antibody staining. The remainder had SIgM, which was associated with SIgD in one third of the cases. 70% of the SIg negative group had extensive extramedullary involvement (EMI) compared with 35% of the SIg positive group at pres… Show more

“…22 A tendency towards an absence of detectable surface Ig prevalently among males with conspicuous adenosplenomegaly without correlation to the clinical staging by Rai and associates' has been noticed. 23 Patients with associated chronic diseases at diagnosis constitute approximately 25% of our series, and, moreover, they were not seen to be uniformly distributed. In fact, a higher incidence was observed in the older patients, in males, and in cases with anemia and/or thrombopenia, with a small overlap between these latter cases and the complicated ones.…”

“…In addition, studies have indicated that up to 30% of cases of chronic lymphocytic leukemia are negative for surface immunoglobulins (null‐cell disease). , Davis has stated that both T and B cells purified from patients with both “B‐cell‐predominant” and “T‐cell‐predominant” chronic lymphocytic leukemia are abnormal in their mitogenic response to phytohemagglutinin . These findings suggest that both T and B cells are defective in the condition.…”

“…In this paper, we considered these cases as B-CLL because clinical pic tures and morphologic studies of leukemic cells differed little from those of typical cases with B-CLL and leukemic cells pos sessed human B lymphocyte andgen. These exceptional cases have been reported by several authors [9,11].…”
