Blood lactate as a predictor for in-hospital mortality in patients admitted acutely to hospital: a systematic review

Abstract: BackgroundUsing blood lactate monitoring for risk assessment in the critically ill patient remains controversial. Some of the discrepancy is due to uncertainty regarding the appropriate reference interval, and whether to perform a single lactate measurement as a screening method at admission to the hospital, or serial lactate measurements. Furthermore there is no consensus whether the sample should be drawn from arterial, peripheral venous, or capillary blood. The aim of this review was:1) To examine whether b… Show more

“…Kruse et al (2011) completed a systematic review of the literature surrounding the measurement of lactate, via differing routes. They concluded that a peripheral venous lactate demonstrated a good correlation to arterial lactate, as well as a very high sensitivity and acceptable specificity for hyperlactaemia.…”

“…Biochemical values for electrolytes and arterial gasses were within normal range. Although the patient's plasma lactate had been high, this is correlated to high morbidity and mortality [1]. The blood concentration of methylphenidate (racemate) was cleared from severely toxic levels to below therapeutic concentration (Figure 1).…”
