Blood inventory management: Ordering policies for hospital blood banks under uncertainty

Abstract: The blood supply chain faces several challenges, such as stochastic demand and supply, the relation between the various stages of the chain, and the intrinsic nature of the product. Blood is a perishable, scarce, and (in most cases) voluntarily supplied product used to perform vital transfusions in patients which increases the pressure of managing its supply chain as efficiently and effectively as possible. For these reasons, it is crucial to have optimized inventory management that allows the availability of … Show more

“…Franco and Alfonso-Lizarazo (2020) constructed two-stage mixed-integer programming models based on simulation-driven optimization methods for strategic and operational decisions in pharmaceutical supply chains, in which uncertainty appears in the demand, lead times, and costs of medicines. Meneses et al (2023) investigated the blood inventory management problem with uncertainty in demand and constructed a two-stage SP model. Li et al (2022) examined the issues of blood component preparation and inventory management under uncertainty in the whole blood supply and blood component demand.…”

“…Using stochastic programming, a model was created for managing HBBs (Meneses et al, 2021). However, there exists another model which includes an ABO substitution that minimizes wastages, shortages, and overall costs associated with BIM (Attari and Abdoli, 2020).…”

“…The most studied stage in BSC, the inventory stage, is considered in 153 articles out of the total 262 classified articles. A great part of the latter-day studies focused on the inventory stage try to determine optimal or near-optimal ordering policies [44,[111][112][113][114]. Some consider issuance policies along with ordering policies [69,[115][116][117]; however, only a limited number of articles focus on issuance policies alone [68,74].…”
