“…Among these entry routes, the diet is the major source of PCBs, especially fatty fish, meat and dairy products. PCBs have been detected in a suite of body tissues and fluids such as maternal and children’s blood and/or serum, cord blood, foetal adipose tissue, placenta, infant blood, blood from males and breast milk in Arctic peoples (AMAP 2015 ; Nøst et al 2013 ; Bonefeld-Jørgensen 2004 ; Donaldson et al 2010 ; Dudarev et al 2004 ; Hansen 2000 ; Klopov et al 1998 ; Nøst et al 2013 ). In the blood of breast-fed infants, the concentration may be many times higher than in maternal blood (Boucher et al 2010 ).…”

“…The recommended safe intakes of traditional food items (see Table III ) are supported by the relatively high concentrations of POPs and mercury found in the blood of the residents of Uelen and Kanchalan ( 3 , 7 , 17 20 ). Since cigarette smoke is the main source of cadmium, consumption of offal (specifically liver and kidneys) is primarily an issue for smokers.…”

The stacked bar plots represent the results of all papers on Arctic Indigenous food systems on which full-text assessment was carried out (n = 526) of Indigenous Peoples (Adamou et al 2020;Dudarev et al 2004). Health effects associated with the consumption of contaminated foods are discussed (Bank-Nielsen et al 2019; Dallaire et al 2013).…”
