Blood Coagulation Tests in Toxicological Studies-Review of Methods and Their Significance for Drug Safety Assessment-

Abstract: In general toxicological studies, prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time are routinely measured to assess blood coagulation. Special (problem-driven) tests for blood coagulation are of significance to detect abnormalities and investigate the mechanism of toxicity in detail. In this review, we compiled widely scattered information on blood coagulation testing from different fields in the biological area, and reviewed the methods available and their significance in toxicological studies. The … Show more

“…A systematic review and meta-analysis of 16 prospective studies on the relationship between n-3 intake and T2DM risk found that there was no effect of fish and/or seafood consumption nor EPA and DHA consumption on risk of developing T2DM. However, dietary ALA was associated with a non-significant trend towards reduced T2DM risk (237). The authors concluded that further studies are needed to investigate the associations between ALA and T2DM (172).…”

“…Values were obtained with an automated hematology analyser, K-4500 (Sysmex Co.). Blood coagulation activity was examined based on prothrombin time (PT), and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) using commercial kits (Dade ® Thromboplastin•C Plus, Dade ® Actin ® Activated Cephaloplastin Reagent and 20 mM calcium chloride, Dade Behring Inc.) on an automated blood coagulating analyser, Sysmex CA-1000 (Sysmex Co.) (Kurata and Horii, 2004). Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT), alanine aminotransferase (ALAT), leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), total bilirubin (TBil), albumin (Alb) and total protein (TP) as plasma chemical parameters were measured using a Hitachi 7070 automatic analyser (Hitachi Ltd).…”

“…The mutations in the F2 and F5 genes affect blood coagulation [18,19]; the C677T polymorphism in the MTHFR gene causes disorders in the development of nervous system [20]; variations in the ApoE gene are associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease [21]; and mutations in genes RAS [22,23], p53 [24], and BRCA1 [25] are associated with the development of various cancers.…”
