Blood Coagulation Testing Smartphone Platform Using Quartz Crystal Microbalance Dissipation Method

Abstract: Blood coagulation function monitoring is important for people who are receiving anticoagulation treatment and a portable device is needed by these patients for blood coagulation self-testing. In this paper, a novel smartphone based blood coagulation test platform was proposed. It was developed based on parylene-C coated quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) dissipation measuring and analysis. The parylene-C coating constructed a robust and adhesive surface for fibrin capturing. The dissipation factor was obtained … Show more

“…Blood coagulation changes the basic acoustic state of the liquid, and by observing changes in the resonant frequency of the blood, changes in its viscosity can be analyzed and the time course of coagulation time can be obtained. Effective acoustic measurement devices include quartz crystal mass (QCM) balance resonators and surface acoustic waves ( 19 ). A portable coagulation detection method based on a QCM sensor has been proposed that allows researchers to obtain dissipative factor results and coagulation indicators via smartphone analysis.…”

“…For driving the oscillations and reading them out of the quartz crystal, an oscillator circuit and a network analyzer are used in combination. Muller et al (2010) [ 59 ], Hussain et al (2015) [ 60 ], and Yao et al (2018) [ 61 ] have investigated the successful and efficient detection of PT using QCM sensors and have nicely compared them to conventional coagulometers. Yao et al extended the QCM sensing with a novel smartphone/Bluetooth-based testing platform for fast coagulation measurements as shown in Figure 9 a,b.…”
