Blood Cell Formation in Certain Teleost Fishes

Abstract: 1. The blood cells of trout and roach consist of nucleated erythrocytes and reticulocytes, nucleated thrombocytes, coarse and fine granulocytes, and lymphocytes of varying sizes. It is difficult to distinguish any cells showing characteristics similar to those of the monocytes of mammals. Immature cells occur more frequently in the blood than is the case in mammals. 2. The coarse granulocytes very commonly escape from the blood vessels, and have been observed in large numbers in the intestinal m… Show more

“…Thus the stem cells have been fully characterised and their DNA synthetic activity pointed out. The results of the present investigation confirm the suspicion expressed by Catton (1951) that the so called chromatin 'Knots' or blocks of chromatin are artefacts. The main changes observed during neutrophilic development are as follows:…”

“…As such there was no question of their tracing the neutrophilic series in the species, even though they gave a general description of granulocyte development. Even the other reports (Duthie 1939 andCatton 1951) do not trace the development of this cell type in particular, although the description given by Duthie (1939) and Catton (1951) for fine granulocytes could be considered closest to that for neutrophils. Recent contributions to leucocytes (Ellis 1977) though pointing out this deficiency have not dealt with the development of neutrophils.…”

“…Trout blood cells stained by Romanowsky stains are described by various authors: Catton (1951), Agnesotti (1932), Barnhart (1969) and Weinreb & Weinreb (1969). Useful descriptions of the peripheral blood cells of the common goldfish Curamus uurutw (L.) are given by Watson et al (1963) and .…”
