Blood Biomarker Profile Alterations in Newborn Canines: Effect of the Mother′s Weight

Abstract: This study aims to determine the effect of the weight of bitches on liveborn and stillbirth puppies from eutocic births, and physiological blood alterations during the first minute postpartum. A total of 52 female dogs were evaluated and distributed in four categories: C1 (4.0–8.0 kg, n = 19), C2 (8.1–16.0 kg, n = 16), C3 (16.1–32.0 kg, n = 11), and C4 (32.1–35.8 kg, n = 6). The dams produced 225 liveborn puppies and 47 were classified as stillbirth type II. Blood samples were taken from the umbilical vein to … Show more

“…It was observed in 51 equines that under 1 year of age diagnosed with colic, where a HRV was greater differences between RR intervals in animals that had a greater probability of surviving compared to animals that had a lower probability of survival (64.8 ms vs. 33.4 ms) [ 95 ]. The previous observations confirm that this primary response to stress or pain is unlikely to be a sustained response that could be the prelude to late endocrine changes [ 96 , 97 ].…”

“…Other indicators that have been employed with equines include blood glucose [ 104 ], and lactate levels [ 114 ], serum creatine kinase [ 115 ], and plasma beta-endorphin [ 116 , 117 ], but these parameters are not exclusive for detecting stress [ 20 , 97 ]. Therefore, an endocrinal response can be an indicator of anxiety and pain that could even help to identify when it is a chronic or acute event by considering the indicators involved.…”

“…Factors that influence birth weight could be classified as maternal, fetal, and placental [ 115 ]. Dam size, weight, body condition, age and breed, environmental conditions, as well as litter size were described as important variables that affect fetal weight [ 103 , 116 ]. Due to the fact that birth weight reflects intrauterine nutrition of the fetus, the condition of the placenta is one of the basic factors affecting the newborn [ 113 ].…”

“…Observations of human newborns show that the temperature of the thoracic region has values similar to those of body temperature and that this correlates significantly with parameters such as the mother’s weight ( r 2 = 0.31) [ 118 ]. This has also been demonstrated in neonate dogs, where alterations in blood flow permit evaluating the risk of death during normal births [ 119 ].…”
