income.pdf 4.0 should help meeting sustainable challenges by increasing the agri-food supply chain stakeholders revenues as well as decreasing their pressure for handling complex and external factors they cannot control, such as weather, market behaviours and policies, but also to react on time by visualising current trends in needs. This paper focus principally on the factory farm model issued from the European and north American style. In those typologies of farms the Industry 4.0 elements can be introduced and merged with the agricultural domain to create the Agri-Food 4.0. The focus is more specialised on the industrial farming although the Agri-Food 4.0 is started to be adapted also to the organic and silvo-pasture paradigms. Thus, this paper, considering a review over than two hundred papers, provides a contribution to knowledge by establishing the linkages between new 4.0 trends in technologies and Agri-Food Supply Chain Challenges, which opens the 4.0 research field for a multidisciplinary work. The choice of the literature review methodology focused firstly on key words related to the Agri-food technology, then the second approach was to focus on selected journals and at the end we looked for the data-based repository and the linked publications. To accomplish this, the structure in this paper is as follows: in the first place, a compressive state of the art of Agri-Food 4.0 related technologies is covered. In the second place, a review and contribution coming from digital technologies to the new supply chain methods in Agri-Food shows linkages with next trends and technologies. Next, and linked to the agri-food supply chain challenges, the fourth section presents new trends and models in agri-food supply chains, especially in the domain of risk management, collaboration, governance, cold chain management, globalization, information and communication technologies, Logistics, supply chain structures and sustainable agri-food supply chains. Through a systematic review of publications in reputed peer-reviewed journals, this paper investigates the role of blockchain technology in sustainable supply chain management. It uses the What, Who, Where, When, How, and Why (5W+1H) pattern to formulate research objectives and questions. The review considers publications since 2015, and it includes 187 papers published in 2017, 2018, 2019, and the early part of 2020, since no significant publications were found in the year 2015 or 2016 on this subject. It proposes a reusable classification framework—emerging technology literature classification level (ETLCL) framework—based on grounded theory and the technology readiness level for conducting literature reviews in various focus areas of an emerging technology. Subsequently, the study uses ETLCL to classify the literature on our focus area. The results show traceability and transparency as the key benefits of applying blockchain technology. They also indicate a heightened interest in blockchain-based information systems for sustainable supply chain management starting since 2017. This paper offers invaluable insights for managers and leaders who envision sustainability as an essential component of their business. The findings demonstrate the disruptive power and role of blockchain-based information systems. Given the relative novelty of the topic and its scattered literature, the paper helps practitioners examining its various aspects by directing them to the right information sources.

Designing a Blockchain Model for the Paris Agreement’s Carbon Market Mechanism

This paper examines the benefits and constraints of applying blockchain technology for the Paris Agreement carbon market mechanism and develops a list of technical requirements and soft factors as selection criteria to test the feasibility of two different blockchain platforms. The carbon market mechanism, as outlined in Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, can accelerate climate action by enabling cooperation between national Parties. However, in the past, carbon markets were limited by several constraints. Our research investigates these constraints and translates them into selection criteria to design a blockchain platform to overcome these past limitations. The developed selection criteria and assumptions developed in this paper provide an orientation for blockchain assessments. Using the selection criteria, we examine the feasibility of two distinct blockchains, Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric, for the specific use case of Article 6.2. These two blockchain systems represent contrary forms of design and governance; Ethereum constitutes a public and permissionless blockchain governance system, while Hyperledger Fabric represents a private and permissioned governance system. Our results show that both blockchain systems can address present carbon market constraints by enhancing market transparency, increasing process automation, and preventing double counting. The final selection and blockchain system implementation will first be possible, when the Article 6 negotiations are concluded, and governance preferences of national Parties are established. Our paper informs about the viability of different blockchain systems, offers insights into governance options, and provides a valuable framework for a concrete blockchain selection in the future.
