Blockage of the lacrimal drainage apparatus as a side effect of docetaxel therapy

Abstract: Playing it cool: The mass‐analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectrum of jet‐cooled cobaltocene shows a surprisingly rich vibronic structure which provides high‐resolution adiabatic (Iad.) and vertical (Ivert.) ionization energies of the neutral molecule, as well as vibrational frequencies of the gas‐phase cation. The spectrum is indicative of both Jahn–Teller (JT) and pseudo‐Jahn–Teller (PJT) activity in the 19‐electron [Cp2Co] sandwich complex.

“…Myelosuppression was relatively mild, consistent with published literature suggesting that weekly docetaxel showed less neutropenia than triweekly administration. 37 Instead, as previously reported, 38,39 tearing and nail changes were persistent, troublesome toxicities. Particularly, the nail changes observed in this trial appeared to be more frequent and severe than those reported in previous trials of weekly docetaxel, 37,40 suggesting the possibility of synergism between weekly docetaxel and capecitabine in the development of nail toxicity.…”

“…Esmaeli et al (26) from MD Anderson Cancer Center reported on 148 patients with this type of side effect. Thirty of 71 patients given weekly docetaxel needed surgery to correct epiphora.…”

“…3) and for other chemo side effects from 11.4 to 20.7. The global quality of life (QLQ-C30) was significantly associated with gastrointestinal side effects and the attitude towards disease at baseline and after the first course of chemotherapy, but changed during treatment to neurological [25][26][27][28] side effects and other side effects related to chemotherapy in addition to gastrointestinal side effects all measured on the QLQ-OV28 scale (Fig. 4).…”

“…Nail changes are more common with the weekly schedule than with the every-21-day schedule (37% vs 30%, respectively) (Tannock et al 2004). Grade 3 and grade 4 blockage of the lacrimal drainage apparatus causing excessive tearing occurred in 0.6% in the TAX 327 study, but Esmaeli and colleagues reported this as a more common occurrence with the weekly schedule (Esmaeli et al 2003). Excessive eye tearing should be monitored and prompt intervention is imperative.…”
