Blended tube feeding prevalence, efficacy, and safety: What does the literature say?

Abstract: The use of BTF is primarily patient or caregiver driven. Blenderized tube feeding requires oversight by health care providers just as commercial formulas. Health care providers should be aware of the use of BTF and the effect it can have on different patient populations regarding content, cost, safety, and efficacy in the clinical and home settings.

“…However, not all patients are candidates for BTF. Patients must be medically stable, use a >14‐French tube, be at least 6 months old, and be slowly transitioned to blended food . BTF typically requires a higher volume to meet nutrient needs, so patients must be able to tolerate bolus feeding.…”

“…HEN teams will need to assist caregivers of tube‐fed patients with navigation of school, travel, and potential hospital stays with their BTF. Through initial and ongoing feeding oversight, HEN teams with BTF training can help caregivers avoid the potential pitfalls of whole‐food feeding, including clogged tubes, inadequate nutrient provision, and microbial contamination . Frequent patient assessment and analysis/revisions of BTF recipes by the RDN is of particular importance in pediatric populations in which growth and higher susceptibility to malnutrition impact care.…”

“…Furthermore, although studies on safety and efficacy are limited, most published work indicates BTF confers advantages in selected patient populations . Caregiver or patient request, improved gastrointestinal function, and reduced tube‐feeding intolerance are primary reasons registered dietitian/nutritionists (RDNs) consider BTF in enterally fed patients . At least 5 published studies report effectiveness of BTF in symptom resolution of tube‐feeding intolerance, including gagging, retching, abdominal pain and bloating, constipation, and diarrhea .…”
