Bleeding meckel's diverticulum in infancy: Unusual scintigraphic and ultrasound appearances

Abstract: We report a case of a bleeding Meckel's diverticulum where scintigraphic and sonographic findings were thought to suggest an ileal duplication. We are not aware of previous reports of sonographic imaging of an uncomplicated Meckel's diverticulum.

“…However, the double wall sign can also be a characteristic of Meckel's diverticulum or sonographic artifacts [2,7,8]. Furthermore, Meckel's diverticulum can have a spherically shaped cystlike appearance, which is similar to an enteric duplication cyst, on sonography [9]. Despite Meckel's diverticulum is located on the antimesenteric border and communicates with the adjacent bowel lumen, in contrast to the enteric duplication cyst [6,10], these differentiating features are often not visible on sonography or CT.…”

“…It is generally asymptomatic, and the rate of its lifelong complications has been reported to be 4%-10% (11). In symptomatic patients, het- erotopic gastric and pancreatic mucosa are histologically found in Meckel's diverticulum (11). The most frequently seen complications of Meckel's diverticulum are hemorrhage, obstruction, and diverticulitis (12).…”

“…Meckel diverticulum, the most common congenital small bowel abnormality, may be complicated by haemorrhage 1. Meckel diverticulum, a remnant of the omphalomesenteric or vitelline duct connecting the yolk sac to the midgut through the umbilical cord, arises from the antimesenteric border of the distal small bowel, typically 40–100 cm from the ileocaecal valve.…”
