“…One possible confounder for the relationship between economic development and HIV infection is historical exposure to communism. Post‐communist countries tend to be poorer than the other countries included in the sample and, although they promoted labour market equality for women, these countries also enabled a flourishing sex trade, which may in turn have increased exposure to HIV . However, we found that the relationship between average income among the poorest and HIV prevalence among sex workers became stronger but increased the standard errors ( β = −1.91; P = 0.054), even after we controlled for a dummy variable signifying countries that had communist governments prior to 1989–1991.…”
