Bladder stone following intravesical migration of surgical clip five years after radical prostatectomy

Abstract: Bladder stone formation on iatrogenic foreign bodies following radical prostatectomy is an uncommon postoperative complication. We present the case of a bladder lithiasis that developed around a metallic clip five years after radical retropubic prostatectomy.

“…For the choice of the treatment of BS, many factors must be taken into consideration, including the composition and size of the stone, general condition of the patients, previous treatment history and anatomic abnormalities. Furthermore, the modalities of surgical equipment also play an important role in therapeutic success [ 19 ]. Transurethral surgery has become commonly used due to its high efficacy and low morbidity following the development of newer endoscopic and fragmentation equipment [ 20 ].…”

“…With respect to symptoms, patients predominantly present with either obstructive or storage LUTS and gross hematuria. [1][2][3]5,9,[14][15][16] Incidental asymptomatic cases have been also documented to a lesser extent. 11,12,17 Bladder lithiasis following prostatectomy must remarkably alert clinicians, given that a chronic clip-induced inflammation may act as a nidus for stone formation.…”

“…The use of surgical clips (SCs) has dramatically increased over the years, conferring several advantages such as convenient and rapid application, safety, precision, and reliability. [1][2][3] Both metallic and Hem-o-lok ® clips (HOLCs) have been widely applied in radical prostatectomy, mainly targeting the control of critical anatomical structures. [4][5][6] Despite the inherent advantages of their use, various cliprelated complications associated with migration into the urinary tract have also been described.…”
