Over the past century, Black American scholars have designed, applied, and promoted conceptual frameworks and research models that propose nuanced understandings of psychological development. This article highlights examples of their contributions to understanding the differential impact of diverse contextual and situational factors. Through examinations of the psychological effects of Blackness on the development of cognition, competence, identity, and social functioning, Black psychologists outline pathways and provide tools for ecological culturally rooted methodologies. These multidisciplinary approaches run in contrast to dominant trends in the field and thus broaden developmental science's reach and influence. In the 1950s, developmental research by Black psychologists was instrumental to the fight for civil rights. Today, it continues to provide a basis for advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. Public Significance StatementRecent calls for representation, discussions of systemic issues, and closer attention to the mental health of Black Americans highlight the need for renewed attention to the contributions Black scholars have made to our understanding of how culture and context impact lived experiences. This article outlines how Black scholars have designed, applied, and promoted nuanced approaches to the study of human growth and development. Research by Black scholars was foundational to the fight for civil rights and continues to provide a basis for advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

Revising the economic frameworkSustainability has become fashionable. Everyone, from politicians to corporate executives to local development boards, is for sustainable economic development, the common context in which this term is used. What exactly is meant by sustainable economic development, however, is by no means clear or agreed on. The term sustainability has, in fact, taken on such vague denotations that it has become meaningless; so much so that, as McKibben (1996) argues, a new word is needed to express the challenging relationship between economic and environmental sustainability [1].According to Tisdell the notion of sustainable development can be viewed as a compromise informed by prudent realism. He writes:In adopting the goal of sustainable (economic) development, conservationists avoid direct confrontation with interests favouring economic growth. In the past, conservationists, on the whole, obtained a reputation for being opposed to all economic change and development. So cast in a negative role, they had little chance to influence economic growth and development decisions in a way more sensitive to environmental needs (1991, p. 195).

What constitutes welfare has been a decisive question in economics. While its past focus has commonly been on material wealth and distributional issues another dimension has been added in recent years. Welfare, and particularly future welfare is determined also by the limits to expanding material wealth posed by the biological, chemical and physical parameters which characterize our environment. All economic activity takes place within the constraints posed by this environmental context.A term which has come to characterize this added dimension and its tension with the traditional welfare focus of economics is sustainability. Sustainability refers to the recognition that economic activity cannot be sustained independent of the functions and services provided by the biophysical world, commonly referred to as the environment. Yet while the term sustainability has become commonplace in much of the policy debate of recent years its meaning remains opaque. Sustainability has been defined as maintaining the existence of the human species, maintaining intergenerational welfare, maintaining productivity and resilience of economic systems (Tisdell, 1991, p. 164), maintaining capital stocks -including "natural capital stocks" (Costanza et al., 1992, p. 9) and as maintaining the regenerative capacity of the environment (Hueting, 1980;Hueting et al., 1992).Perceived tensions or compatibilities between economic activity and ecological sustainability are as varied as its definitions. While some refer to sustainable economic development, or sustainable production others refer to sustainable growth [1]. The tension between these interpretations is evident in the WCED's Brundland report:Many people fear that a more rapidly growing world economy will apply environmental pressures that are no more sustainable than the pressure presented by growing poverty. The increased demand for energy and other non-renewable raw materials could significantly raise the price of these items relative to other goods. The Commission's overall assessment is that the international economy must speed up world growth while respecting the environmental constraints (WCED, 1987, p. 89). Given these tensions between economic development and its environmental context, how does economic theory integrate sustainability into its welfare considerations?
