BL2D-SMC, the supramolecular crystallography beamline at the Pohang Light Source II, Korea

Abstract: BL2D-SMC at the Pohang Light Source II is a supramolecular crystallography beamline based on a bending magnet. The beamline delivers high-flux tunable X-rays with energies from 8.3 to 20.7 keV and a 100 µm (horizontal) × 85 µm (vertical) full width at half-maximum focal spot. Experiments involving variable temperature, photo-excitation and gas sorption are supported by ancillary equipment and software in the beamline. The design of the beamline, its role and the main components are described.

“…The X‐ray quality single crystals were coated with paratone‐ N oil and the diffraction data measured at 100(2) K with synchrotron radiation ( λ = 0.700 Å) for [(L‐a)ZnCl 2 ] , [(L‐b) 2 ZnCl 2 ] , [(L‐c)PdCl 2 ] , [(L‐c)ZnCl 2 ] and [(L‐c)Cd(μ ‐ Br)Br] 2 on an ADSC Quantum‐210 detector at 2D SMC with a silicon (111) double‐crystal monochromator at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, South Korea. The PAL BL2D‐SMDC program was used for data collection (detector distance is 63 mm, omega scan; ∆ ω = 1°, exposure time is 1 s per frame), and HKL3000sm (Ver. 703r) was used for cell refinement, reduction and absorption correction.…”

“…The diffraction data were measured with synchrotron radiation on a BL2D SMC ADSC Quantum-210 detector with a silicon (111) doublecrystal monochromator (0.610 Å) at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, Korea and with a nitrogen cold stream (173 K). The PAL BL2D-SMDC Program [12] was used for collection of data, and HKL3000sm (v715) [13] was used for cell refinement, reduction, and absorption correction. The crystal structure was solved by the direct method with SHELXT-2014 program and refined by full-matrix least-squares calculations with the SHELXL-2017 program package [14].…”

“…Recently commissioned beamlines dominantly or partly dedicated to small-molecule crystallography include, among others, I19 at the Diamond Light Source [6,7], MX1 at the Australian Synchrotron [8], and BL2D-SMC at the Pohang Light Source [9]. Examples of approved and very productive dedicated instruments include beamlines 11-3-1 [10] and 12-2-2 [11] at the Advanced Light Source (Berkeley, CA, USA).…”
