A metastable polymorph of V2O3 is prepared by reaction of VF3 with a water-saturated gaseous mixture of 10 vol% H2 in Ar at 873 K for 2.5 h. The product is characterized by powder XRD, magnetic measurements, and DFT calculations. The new polymorph crystallizes with the bixbyite-type structure in the space group Ia3 with Z = 16. At ≈823 K transformation to the well-known corundum-type phase (space group R3c, Z = 6) occurs. The bixbyite-type phase exhibits a paramagnetic to canted antiferromagnetic transition at about 50 K. - (LERCH*, M.; et al.; Inorg. Chem. 50 (2011) 14, 6762-6766, http://dx.
