Bitter melon extract inhibits breast cancer growth in preclinical model by inducing autophagic cell death

Abstract: Breast cancer is a major public health problem worldwide in women and current therapeutic strategies are not adequately effective for this deadly disease. We have previously shown the anti-proliferative activity of bitter melon extract (BME) in breast cancer cells. In this study, we observed that BME treatment induces autophagosome-bound Long chain 3 (LC3)-B and accumulates protein p62/SQSTM1 (p62) in breast cancer cells. Additionally, we observed that BME treatment in breast cancer cells increases phospho-AMP… Show more

“…[9,10] Regular intake of indomethacin may, however, result in side effects, especially, gastric ulceration [11] by decreasing blood flow into the mucosal regions and increasing gastric juice volume, leading to decrease in gastric pH. [14][15][16] Recently, compounds isolated from natural products were found to be beneficial in treating various metabolic diseases, including cancer. “…Numerous natural products have proven to be useful and effective in sensitizing conventional agents. Some natural product molecules can prevent the side effects of chemotherapy and improve the lifetime of patients associated with lung cancer . Traditional medicines possess potent antitumor effects, by changing in the aberrant effects caused by molecular and cellular levels .…”

“…In preclinical model, BME (bitter melon extract) inhibits the growth of breast cancer by encouraging autophagic cell death. [86] A third important reason of death in several populations of the world is prostate cancer. Kuguacin J which is extracted from BM has ability to constrain the prostate cancer growth.…”
